Variable rate mortgages double in popularity

Fri, 28 Aug 2009

New research from John Charcol mortgage brokers has shown the variable rate wagon is gaining pace amongst fixed rate buyers.

New figures show some 35% of clients chose a variable rate deal in July, compared to 17% for June. John Charcol attributes this to recent rises in the cost of fixed-rate mortgages .

Figures over the last 19 months shows fixed-rate deals peaked in April 2008 then subsided; followed by a larger still burst of activity in the same month this year.

It is believed by many the recent up take is in response to the low current base rate which, thanks to further quantitative easing by the bank of England, see’s little sign of raising this year
