Mortgage market dominated by major lenders

Wednesday 19th August 2009

According to recent  news from the council of mortgage lenders, the five biggest mortgage lenders in the UK are dominating the mortgage lending market with the top 5 accounting for almost 75% of all mortgage lending over 2008.

The figures indicate the ‘credit crunch’ has left most small lenders without access to lending funds . The limiting of wholesale money markets severed the funding lifeline of smaller mortgage lenders, and the government’s bail out failed to take such lenders into consideration.

The major mortgage lenders have suffered hard during the crunch, none so notable as Northern Rock. Lloyds Banking Group currently holds the largest mortgage market share, with Santander hot on their heals.
