Mortgage Arrears & Repossessions Fall
Tuesday 18th August 2009
There has been concern of late with regards to mortgage lenders will to assist those falling behind on their payments. Recent figures however show that mortgage debt and repossessions were down in the second quarter of this year.
The research released by the Council of Mortgage Lenders shows that 11,400 people's homes were repossessed in the second quarter of 2009, the same period in 2008 saw 12,700 repossession cases; these figures represent over a 10% reduction in repossessions.
Over 139,000 mortgages were in arrears by over 2.5% of the total outstanding mortgage principle; Compare these figures to those of the same period in 2008, 203,900 and you can see that while repossessions have drop considerably, they have not dropped in scale to the number of those in arrears.
Jackie Bennett, the head of policy at the council of mortgage lenders, is reported to have said: "The data shows that lenders are committed to helping borrowers manage their way through temporary payment problems and get their mortgage back on track over time, avoiding possession where possible." Others believe that banks are simply protecting their balance sheet by taking action earlier rather than later.
Many mortgage professionals have said that the charges faced by those in arrears over their mortgage are disproportionally large.
