More people search for new home mortgage

New figures from price comparison website moneysupermarket.com have shown that the number of people looking for a mortgage to finance a home purchase has risen.

In the past eight months, the number of people searching the site for a home purchase loan has increased by a fifth, with a drop of nearly a third in the website's users who are looking for a remortgaging option.

The site has taken this as a sign of a boost in confidence for the mortgage market, claiming that the public has become more convinced that house prices have stabilised.

Hannah-Mercedes Skenfield, mortgage spokesperson at moneysupermarket.com, said: " Homeowners looking to step up the housing ladder may therefore be looking to take advantage of the current low price environment with a view that prices cannot fall any further."

With the stamp duty holiday coming to an end in 2010, many buyers may be looking to enter the market before its reinstatement.
