Improvement in mortgage lending
Tue, 20 Oct 2009
According to recent reports from the Council of Mortgage Lenders, gross mortgage lending climbed slightly during September. The figures for total mortgage lending increased by 2% on August figures, but remained 27% down on figures from September last year.
Gross mortgage lending during the third quarter of the year was way up compared with the second quarter, but 36% down on the third quarter of last year. The modest improvement between August and September was blamed on a decline in remortgaging .
The chief economist of the CML, Paul Samter, reportedly commented: " House buying activity is running at considerably higher levels than around the turn of the year. However, it remains weak on any historic comparison and is unlikely to rise much further given the constraints the lending community faces and a still difficult economic backdrop."
