450,000 Londoners trapped by mortgage
Mon, 17 Aug 2009
Furtehr to our article last Friday, mortgages news today believes as many as 450,000 Londoners could be held prissoner by their mortgage and unable to leave their property. Negative equity is to blame for the problem, although some borrowers who took out 100% mortgages and unrealistic self-certified loans may have imprisoned themselves.
Few mortgage loans are available to borrowers with less than a 15% deposit. Ray Boulger, of mortgage broker John Charcol, recently burned Lord Myners for stating the mortgage market remains competitive. Boulger was reported as commenting: "It's extremely worrying that someone who is helping to shape government policy has such a dangerously naive understanding of current conditions." However many have commented on Mr Boulger being short sighted.
