Brits still want to get a mortgage, poll says

Thu, 20 Aug 2009

New figures from a nationwide survey by life insurance specialists Liverpool Victoria (LV) show that the majority of the British population are looking to own a home and take out a mortgage .

67% of those surveyed said that they would be "devastated" if they never owned their own home. A further 51% would take a second job to ensure they can meet mortgage repayments in order to avoid losing their home.

Despite this clear indication many are concerned about meeting mortgage payments, only a meagre 9% have taken mortgage and bill protection insurance products.

Chris McFarlan, head of protection at Liverpool Victoria, is reported to have said: "The financial turmoil of the last year has done nothing to dampen our national obsession with home ownership. It's fascinating to note just how far people would go to avoid having to give up the keys to their castle."
